According to the Skanda Purana and Brahma Purana, Lord Jagannath is a form of Lord Krishna in ecstatic love (Mahabhava), where He manifests a unique appearance — wide eyes, smiling face, and no visible hands or feet — symbolizing boundless mercy and acceptance of all living beings.

In the pastime of King Indradyumna, it is said that the Supreme Lord agreed to manifest in Neem Wood (Daru), floating in the ocean, to bless the world through His Deity form in Jagannath Puri. Lord Vishnu instructed that these Deities would be carved without tools and would appear as wooden forms with deep spiritual meaning.
